Your premier foot and leg rehabilitation provider
Take a step towards comfort with tailored bunion care.
Are you struggling with bunion pain or discomfort? When your big toe is in pain and not in its normal shape, this may interfere with your normal activities and even your quality of life.
At Foot & Leg Podiatry, we offer compassionate, professional care to help you manage and treat bunions, also known as hallux valgus. Whether you’re exploring conservative measures or considering bunion surgery, our team is here to guide you every step of the way. With advanced conservative techniques and a focus on personalised treatment, we’re committed to helping you find relief.
Bunions are a common foot condition where the big toe loses alignment, creating a noticeable bump at the base of the toe joint. This misalignment may cause discomfort and pain, particularly when doing weight-bearing activities or wearing tight footwear that rubs against the exposed big toe joint. Over time, the misalignment may worsen, often accompanied by a growing lump of bone. While some bunions are asymptomatic, others can significantly impact your day-to-day life.
At Foot & Leg Podiatry, we provide dedicated care for bunions, ensuring you have access to both non-surgical and surgical options. Our podiatrists will work with you to develop a treatment plan that prioritises your comfort and long-term foot health, helping you to get back to your favourite activities.
There are two main methods of bunion surgery:
This technique involves a small incision, aiming to reduce the chances of tissue damage and scarring. Minimally invasive surgery often results in less postoperative swelling and a quicker recovery. It requires a highly skilled surgeon, and we commonly refer patients to trusted orthopaedic surgeons for this procedure.
In this approach, a larger incision is made, allowing the surgeon to fully visualise the affected area. While recovery may take longer, traditional bunion surgery is well-established with thoroughly researched outcomes.
There are many non-surgical and surgical approaches to treating bunions. At Foot & Leg Podiatry, we focus on providing minimally invasive conservative technique options wherever possible when it comes to bunion correction.
When seeking professional help for bunions and foot pain, podiatrists are uniquely placed to know the most appropriate non-operative treatment options. We may refer you for surgical intervention if necessary, but we consider bunion surgery to be the last option we try if conservative methods don’t provide pain relief. Podiatrists don’t operate and they are well placed to offer you alternatives to bunion surgery in Perth unless clinically necessary. Be wary of a surgeon who immediately tells you to operate!
We exhaust non-surgical treatment options including:
The above options are undertaken by the patients for six months before surgery is considered by a podiatrist.
If you have a painful bump where your first toe meets your foot, this may be a bunion, also known as hallux valgus. This happens when your first toe drifts over 15 degrees relative to its supporting metatarsal bone. As time passes your toe will drift further, typically making the problem worsen. This may be accompanied by a growing bony bump.
When you come to see us for bunion correction, we will talk with you about your concerns and take note of your medical history. We will then examine your bunion to see how we may be able to address it. In some cases, x-ray guidance may be necessary. After your physical examination, we will discuss your treatment options with you, always aiming for the most conservative treatment possible.
While non-surgical treatments may provide relief, some cases require surgical intervention. Surgery may be recommended if:
We will refer you to a trusted orthopaedic surgeon if surgery becomes necessary. We’ll ensure you’re fully informed about your options and guide you to the most appropriate professional for your needs.
If we believe a procedure like bunion surgery may be your best treatment option, we will refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon who will then talk you through the procedure. This may vary from person to person, though in general it typically involves the surgeon administering general anaesthetic and then realigning the bones, removing excess bone, and addressing any concerns regarding soft tissues. Following surgery, you may need to wear a protective boot or cast and perhaps engage in physical therapy after a period of recovery in an effort to restore mobility and strength.
